A Football Player Who Thinks Women Should Be 'Homemakers,' And More Of This Week's 'One Main Character'

Every day, somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on X from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.
Each day on twitter there is one main character. The goal is to never be it

This week, we've got a pathetic reaction to a Black video game character, the viral "bus hammock" guy and Harrison Butker's wildly outdated views on gender roles.
Wednesday
@Mangalawyer
The character: @Mangalawyer, video game player, casual racist
The plot: Ubisoft unveiled the brand new Assassin's Creed game coming out in November, subtitled "Shadows," and the lead protagonists are a samurai and a ninja. The "problem," according to some people (racists), is that the character of Yasuke — a real historical figure who became a samurai in Japan during the late Sengoku period — isn't Japanese, he's Black.
You don't need to know anything else to guess where this nonsense went for some gamers (racists) crying about "historical inaccuracies" (racism poorly disguised as legitimate critique).
How I always imagined Assassin's Creed in Japan Pre-woke era vs. what we actually got 💀😆

Modern audiences & DEI destroy everything pic.twitter.com/XWF6136vFo
The repercussion: It's super easy to find out who is a prejudiced, bigoted a—hole with one simple trick. Not only do they intentionally say the acronym DEI stands for "didn't earn it" when it in fact means "diversity equity and inclusion", but they're concerned about the historical accuracy of a gaming franchise that involves aliens, super powers, ghosts and anachronistic technology. It ultimately doesn't matter what any movie or book or game or show is actually about or who made it, racists will find a way to complain, make it all about them and then attempt to dismiss or boycott "woke" products.
I keep thinking abt this. Even if this person is just “trolling,” it’s a mindset I’ve encountered again and again. Imagine moving in the world thinking that you, as a white man, are the “default” setting for humanity, while women & POCs around you are inherently other, or “woke.” https://t.co/XWoB9kjhyZ

Anyone arguing over how AC Shadows isn’t “historically accurate” has never played an Assassin’s Creed game.
— Ameer (@SynthPotato) May 16, 2024
You cannot convince me otherwise, this franchise has ALWAYS been about fictional stories with fictional protagonists that interact with real people and real events pic.twitter.com/QSVOGUZf6V
The cool thing about the AC Shadows bs controversy from morons is all the fake outrage about historical accuracy in a series where the last three entries have quests where you fight gods and also you can ride a Chocobo camel in one of them pic.twitter.com/CcMZ5ixmV2

I fixed the historical inaccuracies with AC Shadow’s main character! 🥷

Man it’s insane how much racism AC Shadows brought out In the gaming community.

Ok at the end of the day, I personally think the Yasuke situation is secondary to the bigger problem.
— Perma Banned (@GiveMeBanHammer) May 16, 2024
How Ubisoft’s charging for this game.
I’d say people shouldn’t buy AC Shadows not because of Yasuke, but because of this complete travesty of a pricing model. pic.twitter.com/dnkHJUKHJw
Deranged that the AC Shadows discourse isn't entirely about how hot Yasuke is https://t.co/97tEG1P7hc

Bus hammock guy
The character: Bus hammock guy, talented actor, sign obeyer
The plot: If you've spent any time on the app formerly known as Twitter this week, you'll have seen a video of a man lying in a hammock inside a city bus. The clip, which sees the man ask the bus driver "where's the no hammock sign?" and refuse to leave the hammock, has gone viral, with one clip shared to X counting almost 100,000 likes at the time of writing.
This is the craziest shit I've ever seen pic.twitter.com/wc1YGw1oE8
— Microplastics Exploder (@DiabolicalSpuds) May 12, 2024
The repercussion: People couldn't work out whether the bizarre scenario was real or a skit, but it has since emerged that it's the latter. A pair of creators on Facebook, named Lexi and Ocean, have claimed responsibility for the video, saying it was made "for entertainment purposes only."
Though we're admittedly a little disappointed the whole thing turned out to be fake, we're glad everyone got a good laugh out of the video before the boring truth came out.
maybe im a born diplomat or maybe im insane but everyone here has some valid points imo https://t.co/MbtO7OYQVj

Harrison Butker
The character: Harrison Butker, football player, recently thawed caveman
The plot: Harrison Butker, kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, recently gave a commencement speech to the 2024 graduating class of Benedictine College. Considering that this school is fairly close to where he plays football, you'd think this would be a joyous occasion focused on success and community. Unfortunately, his speech included some unambiguously retrograde opinions about women and the LGBTQ community in general.
Among the many offensive comments made, Butker said his wife had "one of the most important titles of all: homemaker" and attacked "degenerate cultural values," "dangerous gender ideologies" and "the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion." All the classics, really.
The repercussion: While there was immediate, widespread disgust at the blatantly misogynistic and homophobic language he used, there is practically zero chance he'll see any professional ramifications beyond a few uncomfortable conversations. The shunning is saved only for people who kneel, it seems.
Sounds like some players “need to stay in their lanes” and shouldn’t be giving commencement speeches.
