In a post on X, Joe Manchin, coal baron and senior US Senator from West Virginia, announced that he is no longer a Democrat. Instead, he is now a registered independent.

While Manchin previously announced that he won't be running for re-election, Axios noted that this move gives him a path to run as an independent, for either US Senate or Governor of West Virginia.
